Every step you take, every move you make… we’ll be watchin’ you. Have altered the lines of a famous song. For, this one is applicable for Subhash Ghai, a proficient storyteller, one of the most successful stories from this side of the Atlantic. Irrespective of how his films are received at the ticket window, Ghai’s movies are always under scrutiny. You watch every film with a magnifying glass.
yuvraj is no exception!
Ghai’s forte has been drama. Recall the dramatic moments in Karz, Vidhaata, Meri Jung, Ram Lakhan, Karma, Saudagar. He re-visits the genre with yuvraj. Besides, yuvraj is his most opulent work thus far. It has a sweeping effect, the film makes a stunning visual statement.
Honestly, yuvraj isn’t Ghai’s best work, but post Yaadein, Kisna and Black & White, yuvraj salvages him, even redeems the storyteller.
The story (Ghai) mirrors a universal truth. Greed leads to disputes and in turn, ruins all relationships. A fact you’ve heard or witnessed time and again in real life. While the story is captivating, the screenplay doesn’t really do justice to the thought. Also, Rahman’s music acts as a soothing balm, but the problem is, it takes time to grow on the listener. And that could be a deterrent.
Yet, in all fairness, yuvraj is a notch above the commonplace. If you intend spending your hard-earned money on it or devoting 3 hours of your precious time on Ghai’s new outing, chances are you won’t regret it.
Deven yuvraj (Salman Khan) is a chorus singer, in love with Anushka (Katrina Kaif). Her father Dr. Banton (Boman Irani), however, is dead against this relationship. Things take a turn when Deven’s father passes away and he returns to London to stake claim on his father’s wealth.
He meets his two estranged brothers Gyanesh yuvraj (Anil Kapoor) and Danny yuvraj (Zayed Khan) after almost twelve years. But things aren’t hunky-dory between them…
Ghai has an eye for visuals and every frame of yuvraj seems like a painting on celluloid. Unmistakably, that’s the first thing you notice as yuvraj unfolds.
It takes time to absorb yuvraj. In fact, Ghai doesn’t open all his cards at the very outset. It’s only when the father (Javed Shaikh) passes away and Mithun Chakraborty, the Executor of the Will, enters the scene that the wheels start moving.
The film gathers momentum after the interval. If the first hour has a few by-now-famous Ghai scenes, the second hour sees Ghai in form, with a number of sequences staying in your memory. The penultimate 20-25 minutes are the best. Watch Anil go through the handycam with disbelief, watch Anil and Salman’s act during the concert, watch Salman’s emotional outburst towards the end… also the titles (brings back memories of Om Shanti Om).
On the flip side, the screenplay is erratic. There’re constant highs and lows in this journey, the film works in patches. In fact, the screenplay falls prey to predictability and mediocrity at places.
Ghai handles the dramatic scenes with flourish. Rahman’s music is soothing, but you expect more because Ghai’s movies are embellished with lilting music that you recall even after 2 or 3 decades. Kabir Lal captures the striking beauty of Europe well. The output is superb. The sets (Omung Kumar) are truly majestic.
yuvraj belongs to Anil Kapoor, who towers above the entire cast and delivers a natural, believable performance. Salman’s looks are inconsistent. At times the boyish look is intact, at times he looks bloated. Ditto for his hairstyle. His performance, however, is better, mainly towards the finale. Zayed tries hard and convinces in a few scenes. Mithun Chakraborty is fantastic in a brief role.
Katrina looks angelic. Despite the focus being on the three men, she registers an impact. Boman Irani is credible, especially in the scene when he steps out of the Operation Theatre towards the end. Aushima Sawhney is confident. Anjan Srivastava and the pack of villains/vamps look straight out of Ram Lakhan and Taal.On the whole, yuvraj is interesting in parts, with the penultimate 20/25 minutes taking the film to an all-time high. At the box-office, the package (a mammoth cast, Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman, the stunning locales of Europe) should ensure a hearty opening and with no major opposition in the forthcoming week, it should keep its investors smiling.

Vaaranam Aayiram Tamil Movie Review

Just how do you describe the life and learnings of one man in an immensely entertaining and engrossing fashion? You do it the way Gautham Menon has done it; you do it by drawing in all your senses and emotions and displaying it as an enchanting piece of art that is the very portrayal of poignancy. This portrait that Gautham has painted, is what we present to you today, as Vaaranam Aayiram.
Life is a circle. You are what you are made of and you are what you make of yourself, so say the old adages. This is the story of Surya, son of Krishnan. Surya grows up surrounded by the one emotion and bond that is often underrated, love.
His father Krishnan is his hero, his icon, and the example he has to live up to. His mother, Malini, is calm, grounded and strong. She is the very epitome of everything that a good mother should be.
Their's is a normal, happy family; a family where the children gain their inner strength from the grit and determination that their parents teach them as lessons for life. In their words, Surya and his sister, learn to believe that, 'Nothing is impossible; not if your heart is pure and your dedication complete.'
These lines of advice goes beyond the usual schoolchild and teenager's academic stress, beyond peer pressure and beyond the emotional confusion only growing up can bring.
The movie carries itself forward on the strength of its narration, arfully tracing various facets of Surya's lifelong journey. Beginning from the time when he is a child, the movie moves on to etch a skillful display of the transitions he undergoes as he is faced with various challenges in life. Whether it is the role of a teenager, a young man, a tortured lover, a patriot or a good son his parents, Surya doles out his usual fare. And when we say that, we mean, perfection.
In his journey, he encounters many things, many people; good and bad. Meghna, is one such important person. She is the love of his life, the woman who made things bigger, brighter and more beautiful for him. But, tragedy spares no one. She leaves him for a career and a future for herself.
Vaaranam Aayiram beautifully portrays that life's tragedies can wreak havoc even as suddenly as a crack of lightning. Is immense pain a human being's true test of strength? Does giving in to pain, make you stronger or beget even more pain?
What was expected to be a boring, long-drawn melodrama turned out to be, at least in bits and pieces, the stories of our lives, with characters all of us have met or lived with at some point in our lives.
Beautifully told and intricately woven, Vaaranam Aayiram is a tale based on the backbone of realism and beautiful music. Speaking of music, here is an orchestra of melodies that will transport you to a different planet.
From the background score, to the situational numbers and of course, the golden oldies sung in Gautham and Suriya's own voices, music is the heartbeat of this movie.
Vaaranam Aayiram impresses visually, in terms of colour and environment, but perhaps this clarity is only because of the clarity we are able to see in each character and not so much because of the visuals itself.
Editing-wise, this is probably the best work Antony and Gautham have done together. The story's flow is almost seamless and at no point will you blink and wonder at sudden gaps in the narration. The actors are simply superb, in the sheer simplicity of their roles and thus, maximum impact.
Suriya is nothing short of brilliant and it is no mere flattery to say that he has, while doing this most difficult job of being a father, teenager, young lover, deranged addict and a man with a purpose, simply risen to standards the of the industry.
The hurt and rage in the underdog schoolboy's eyes, the gleam of love and enthusiasm in the young lover's gaze, the intolerable pain of separation and solace found in hallucinogens, the torturous path back to normalcy, the newfound sense of purpose and meaning; the rekindling of love and passions, all these emotions and nuances have been brilliant portrayed with his eyes and body language, so much so that even if this movie doesn't go on to become a box-office success, his work will be critically acclaimed for a long time to come.
Simran as Malini is, simply fabulous. Fabulous, because she has delivered an iconic performance as the strong, silent and calm mother. Sameera as Meghna, the quintessential modern young woman with career plans and dreams of her own, is better than brilliant. Divya Spandana as Priya, who plays the coy but firm lass who silently harbours feelings of romance for the protagonist, gives you goosebumps, quite literally!
Every single member of the Photon Factory team and Gautham's regular band of filmmaking brothers including the Karthiks, Rajeevans, Meghnas of the world, have small, but noticeable roles.
All these characters has made Vaaranam Aayiram complete, every step of the way. Perhaps the only drawback of the movie is its length. At 3 hours, it's a daunting task to think about watching a movie as intense as this.
But once the tale begins, there is no turning back. Vaaranam Aayiram gives you glimpses into the many aspects of the director's life through this movie. The smart viewer might be able to catch heavy whiffs of Gautham's own family life, experiences of growing up, pain, turmoil and strengths, in the narrative.
It is impossible to talk about or 'view' a movie such as Vaaranam Aayiram without turning it into a spoiler. So all we will say is, watch it, be moved, inspired and touched. A movie has finally been made, which blends beautifully, both, reality and fantasy and through both these realms, manages to capture the essence of a human being. Vaaranam Aayiram is nothing short of a magnum opus.

Vishal and Shekhar seem to be having a rollicking time this year, with almost every album of theirs setting the cash registers ringing. After "Tashan", "Bachna Ae Haseeno", they're out with "Dostana" and it rocks."Desi girl" is an energy packed track that has a good dose of thumping dance beats and variety in terms of lyrics. Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan render it with full gusto and live up to the status of being the most energetic singers in Bollywood. All in all, this track should pep up the pace of the movie.Next is "Jaane Kyun". Vishal Dadlani should get the credit for the success of the song. Not only has he composed "Jaane Kyun" along with Shekhar, but sung the entire song. In spite of a few Hinglish terms, Anvita Dutt Guptan's lyrics are peppy and sweet. This happy, romantic track will find a lot of takers.And if listeners want more of Vishal as lead singer, there's "Khabar nahi". Even though he has Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali for company, Vishal stands out and hits the right chord with listeners. A gentle, melodious piece, again falling in the romantic genre, "Khabar Nahi" cannot be disliked.The series of pleasant numbers doesn't end here. "Kuch Kum" takes it forward. Shaan renders the rhythmical and flowing number to perfection. "Kuch Kum" has some beautiful lyrics, courtesy Vishal Dadlani, who is determined to impress his fans. Listeners would not only like to hear this track repeatedly but would also look forward to watching it onscreen."Maa da laadla" affirms that "Dostana" isn't just about soothing, pleasant numbers but also about celebration. punjabi in flavour, the song has good beats and is sung by Saleem. The lyrics of the song, penned by Kumaar, are noteworthy. The track has a slight humorous essence as well.Vishal goes behind the mike once again to sing "Shut Up & Bounce". He teams up with Sunidhi Chauhan in this out and out lively item number. The track isn't as great as the previous numbers, but cannot be called a weak piece.Karan Johar, producer of the film, can heave a sigh of relief as the music

DHL to Cut 9,500 U.S. Jobs
DHL said it would significantly reduce its air and ground operations in the United States and cut 9,500 jobs within the country. It said it would discontinue U.S. domestic-only air and ground products on Jan. 30 to focus entirely on its international offerings.
